About San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo is one of the world's most celebrated wildlife parks, home to over 3,500 animals representing 650 species and subspecies. Located in Balboa Park in San Diego, California, the zoo spans 100 acres and attracts more than 3 million visitors each year.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance

The zoo is operated by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to wildlife conservation. The organization also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park — a 1,800-acre wildlife sanctuary located 30 miles north of San Diego in Escondido.

History

San Diego Zoo was founded in 1916 by Dr. Harry Wegeforth. It was one of the first zoos in the world to use open-air grottos without cages. Today, it is internationally recognized for its conservation work and animal care programs.
